Blog Photography: Background Tips!

My favourite part about blog posts is definitely the photos! I love nothing more than finding a blog that has gorgeous images to look at and i think the background of the image plays a key role in whether the photo looks good or not! Here are a few of my tips to create a simple and pretty background.

Clean white background

I think a plain white background looks really professional and simple! It emphasises the product you are talking about more and definitely does not distract the reader from the purpose of the photo! I recommend using two pieces of white foam board and creating an L shape on a flat surface, as you can see in the left photo! If you have a DSLR set it to a large aperture (e.g f5.6) as it creates the perfect blurry effect so you won't even see where the two pieces of board join together!

Flat overhead background

If you are taking a shot from above of products lying flat then i would recommend using one piece of white foam board, card or even just paper on a flat surface. Then you can position your products however you like on top. I think the white makes colours pop more so if for example you're photographing nail polish like me then the colours look a lot more vibrant!

Fairy light background

This is my favourite one, i think it is so pretty! For this i placed my fairy lights at the far end of my table and placed the product very close to the front of the table as the bigger the gap the better as it really helps with the depth of field and increases the blurriness of the lights! I then set my camera to a large aperture which makes the lights even more blurry and adds to the twinkly effect.

So those are a few of my favourite background choices! Let me know what you think of them, and if you have any of your own tips to share then write them in the comments below!

Thanks for reading! Xx

  7. Super helpful! So far I've only really experimented with repurposed wood or plain white backgrounds. I love how the wood gives it that rustic feel!

  11. Great tips. Flat lays are my favourite! I tend to use whatever's lying around - my battered floorboards and coffee table at the moment - but I think it works :) natural light is my ultimate need!
